Course description:
The lecture will provide a comprehensive introduction to various aspects of water proton relaxation mechanisms as central contrast mechanisms in brain imaging, as well as methods for measuring relaxation. It is also planned to present a few selected small demo experiments. The material presented will be divided into two parts, the first of which Harald will present in a more traditional lecture style to discuss fundamentals of spin relaxation in general and its relationship to the microstructure and composition of brain tissue in particular. The other half of the presentations will be given by participating IMPRS CoNI doctoral researchers. For this purpose, we will form groups of two to three participants (depending on the total number of attendees), who will then prepare and present a topic together.
To organize these presentations, a preparatory meeting will be held on January 12 at 9:30 a.m. in the seminar room next to the library, where Harald will provide further information on the individual topics, literature recommendations, and other available materials. The division of participants among the various topics will also be discussed at this meeting. If you would like to attend in the lecture, please send an informal email to Harald (moeller@cbs.mpg.de) by January 11, 2026, at the latest. Please indicate in this message whether you wish to attend the lecture passively “just” out of interest in the topic or whether you would like to actively prepare a presentation.
Registration: until January 11, 2026
