- Mark Buchanan is a physicist and science writer based in Europe. A former editor with the international science journal Nature and also New Scientist, he is the author of three books and numerous articles exploring the ideas of modern physics. He writes occasionally for the New York Times, and has a monthly column in Nature Physics. Justin Mullins is a consultant editor at New Scientist where he has covered topics ranging from the Chernobyl accident to the emergence of quantum computing. He was New Scientist’s San Francisco bureau chief during the dotcom boom and later its Boston Editor. He is a former teaching fellow at the University of California, Berkeley.

Course content:
The Scientific Paper Seminar is a writing workshop for early-career scientists. It teaches the skills required for producing research papers of the highest quality for the world's top journals. The workshop is designed to give students the confidence to begin publishing in the increasingly competitive world of science.To that end, the course covers how top journals handle submissions and offers tips for dealing with editors at these publications. And participants should leave the workshop with a reasonably detailed outline of a scientific paper suitable for a journal of their choice.
The course instructors are two highly experienced scientific writers/editors. The workshop includes the following elements:
How high-profile journals such as Nature and Science choose the papers they publish
Types of scientific paper and their structures
The structure of titles and abstracts
How to express complex ideas in clear, emphatic sentences
The structure of paragraphs
Techniques for constructing arguments
Editing skills
Intensive exercises to demonstrate key points
Optional abstract-writing exercise with one-to-one feedback prepared in advance for each student

Credits: 0.5 ECTS CPs (at least 80 % participation and writing sample)
